Planning The Unpredictable: Turning Idle Time into Growth

5min • 01 July 2024 • Updated: 17 January 2025

Picture this: You're standing in line at the grocery store, and it's taking way longer than usual. Maybe the payment system is down, or there's some other technical issue. You check your phone—no new notifications. You wait, then pull out your phone again. Still nothing. Yet, you unlock it, tap on your favorite social media app, and start scrolling.

Minutes pass. You put your phone away, glance around, and sigh. Still no progress. Another glance at your phone reveals that 10 minutes have already passed. Frustrated, you return to scrolling. Then, all of a sudden, the line starts moving. The issue is resolved, and you finally leave with your groceries.

Life Is Unpredictable

Sound familiar? Don't worry—you're not alone.
In our fast-paced lives, these moments of waiting are far more common than we realize. Whether it's standing in line, sitting in a doctor's office, or waiting for a friend, they all share one thing in common: they're unpredictable. Even worse, we can't predict how long they'll last, leaving us in a state of limbo.

In these situations, we're especially vulnerable to falling back on mindless habits. Instead of making conscious choices, we often turn to easy distractions like doom-scrolling social media or lighting up another cigarette.

The Impact of Idle Time

Let's talk about what happens during those moments of waiting. I don't love the term "bad habits" because it implies universal rules for what's good or bad. For me, it's less about the activity itself and more about whether I feel it's a meaningful use of my time.

Take doom-scrolling as an example. Sure, it's satisfying in the short term (thanks, dopamine), but it rarely adds much value in the long run.

More importantly, it's not just about what we do—it's about what we don't. What else could I have done during that time? What opportunities did I miss simply because I defaulted to distraction?

The question is, what can we even do about it? After all, no matter how disciplined we are, we cannot plan the unpredictable.

Adopting Micro Habits

When it comes to time management, we often focus on the predictable parts of our day. But what about the unpredictable ones?

Here's the good news: while you can't control when or how these moments arise, you can prepare for them.
The key is to adopt micro habits—small, low-effort activities that can be done anytime, anywhere. These habits don't require much setup or context and fit easily into short windows of downtime.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Reading a book or an article
  • Listening to a podcast or audiobook
  • Practicing mindfulness or meditation
  • Doing a quick exercise or stretch
  • Learning a new word or phrase in a foreign language
  • Journal your thoughts or reflections

The possibilities are endless. The goal is to find activities that not only suit your interests but also bring value to your day.

It's not about productivity

This is not at all about optimising your day or maximising your productivity.

Don't stress yourself! The sole goal is to feel good regardless of what life throws at us. Maybe, next time you have to wait somewhere, close your eyes for a moment and take a couple of deep breaths. Trust me, it does wonders!

Be Prepared for the Unpredictable

Once you've chosen your micro habits, the next step is preparation. It's all about making these activities easy to access when you need them.

This is where technology can be a powerful ally. Your smartphone—often seen as a source of distraction—can actually help you build better habits.

Here are some apps I recommend:

Personally, I always carry a small book with me. Even if I only have time to read half a page, it adds up over time. This simple habit has already helped me finish two books this year—all during moments I would've otherwise spent waiting.

Conclusion

Life may be unpredictable, but that doesn't mean we're powerless in the face of it.
By consciously deciding how to use these small windows of time, we can transform them into opportunities for growth, learning, or even relaxation.

Find micro habits that work for you, make them easy to access, and watch as these idle moments become meaningful breaks in your busy day.
