Goal Hopping
Goal hopping describes the tendency to change goals or priorities frequently, rather than sticking to a plan.
Drivers include novelty seeking, arrival bias and underestimating setup costs, which resets learning curves and disperses effort.
It undermines single-tasking and task batching, wasting time and energy.
To prevent goal hopping, keep goals aligned, chunk long-term goals into manageable milestones and schedule regular reviews to stay focused. Use clear selection criteria, minimum-commitment windows (e.g., 4–6 weeks) and "exit rules" defined upfront. Track a few lead indicators so progress (or lack of it) is visible before you change direction.
